As Backup Lighting Specialist with more than 17 years in lighting, the R&D V.P. of T&P Litech, Mr. Peter Xu pointed out 2 key points:
1. Temperature Management System (TMS)
The best performance of Lithium happens in the interval of working temperature is within 0°C~45°C during discharging. Higher than 60°C will accelerate the aging of the battery. Sulfur and other organic substances in (SEI) will hydrogenolyze, and producing a large amount of hydrogen gas, which will damage the performance of the battery.
Similarly, low temperature will also damage the reliability of the battery. Lower than -10°C will cause damage to the performance of the battery, resulting in poor charge and discharge performance, increasing capacity loss, and damage to the structure of the battery. In addition, the low temperature environment will also cause the electrolyte to solidify, affecting charging and emptying.
Therefore, when operating lithium batteries, it is strictly necessary to follow the working temperature between -10℃~60℃, and the ideal working temperature of the battery is between 0℃~45℃.
2. Battery Management System (BMS)
During the use of lithium batteries, overcharging, over-discharge, and over-current will affect the service life and performance of the battery, and in serious cases, the lithium battery will burn and explode.
Let’s take a 18650 Lithium battery for example. If the discharging voltage is less than 2.7V, it may cause irreversible attenuation of the battery capacity. What if the discharging voltage reaches 0V? Yes, unless there is a restore circuit, otherwise the battery will be “starved to death”.
In LED Backup lighting, BMS is a very important part which provides Over-Charging Protection (OCP), Over-Discharging Protection (ODP), Over Current Protection (OCP), etc., which protects the battery in a normal operation condition.
The above two points are the main reasons for customer complaints about emergency lights in the market at present.
